In the Historic south-west corner of the Cotswolds, high above Stroud on the wilds of Rodborough Common stands the handsome Bear of Rodborough Hotel. Originally built in the 17th Century, this former coaching inn provided a much appreciated resting-place on the main coaching route from Gloucester to London. To this day it offers a warm welcome to all. Set in 300 acres of National Trust land, the Bear of Rodborough Hotel provides a luxurious retreat where you can enjoy fine food and drink while relaxing in a homely and friendly atmosphere.
This was the most recent venue for the much-missed Cotswold Fireside Tournament and arguable the best, which is why I have chosen to reinstate this event in the UK Backgammon Calendar here at the Bear. Thirty bedrooms have been block-booked for us at a preferential "Backgammon Rate" but this rate is only available until 12 weeks before the event when they will be released back to the Hotel for Public Sale and we will lose our preferential rate. The popularity of this hotel, even in Winter means you have to think about booking now and do so before November 2026 to get the Backgammon Rate. |

The most cost-effective way to stay at the Bear is to share a Twin Room with a friend better still, bring your significant other for a weekend of rest and relaxation with a little free Yoga and the odd country walk thrown in. There is a forum on this site that will allow players to look for room share and car share buddies, but don't wait for me to find you a room share buddy, start asking around now.
To confirm a room reservation The Bear require a 25% non refundable deposit of the total booking. This can be paid by credit card by phone 01453 878522 and quoting ‘Backgammon Tournament’. When paying by credit card they will require the card number, the expiry date, the three digit security number on the reverse of the card and the cardholder’s name.
